Mostly 17th century listed Grade II, the house and byre known as Sanders, in the hamlet of Lettaford, is an excellent example of a Dartmoor long-house which remained in use as a farm worker’s house virtually unaltered for almost a century up to the early 1970s. The Devon Historic Buildings Trust acquired the property late in 1974 but the cost of restoration proved to be beyond its reach even with co-operation and encouragement from the Dartmoor National Park Committee. With considerable regret, the property was sold in 1976, still in a state of dilapidation, to the Landmark Trust which has since undertaken rehabilitation. Despite the inevitable disappointment at having to withdraw from this project, the Trust can nevertheless claim some credit for the eventual rescue of this remarkable survival of a now rare type of vernacular building. |
